## Description

PURPOSE: THE PURPOSE IS TO ADVANCE THE UNDERSTANDING OF OVERLAND HURRICANE WIND SPEEDS, ESPECIALLY AT THE COAST WHERE WINDS, STORM SURGE, AND WAVES CAUSE THE WORST DAMAGE TO CIVIL INFRASTRUCTURE AND LIFELINES. ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED: THE PROJECT HAS THREE PRIMARY TASKS, A STATE-OF-THE-ART LITERATURE REVIEW AND AN INTERDISCIPLINARY WORKSHOP, FOLLOWED BY SYNTHESIS OF THE INFORMATION FROM THE FIRST TWO TASKS INTO A FINAL, PEER-REVIEWED REPORT. EXPECTED OUTCOMES: THE OUTCOME WILL BE A MORE ACCURATE AND SHARED UNDERSTANDING OF THE TRUE INTENSITY OF SURFACE-LEVEL WINDS IN LANDFALLING HURRICANES, WHICH WILL BRIDGE THE LONGSTANDING DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ENGINEERS AND METEOROLOGISTS ON HOW STRONG THESE WINDS REALLY ARE.INTENDED BENEFICIARIES: ENGINEERS AND METEOROLOGISTS, RISK MODELERS, EMERGENCY RESPONSE PLANNERS, INSURANCE AND REINSURANCE COMPANIES, BUILDING CODES AND STANDARDS DEVELOPERS, AND ULTIMATELY THE PUBLIC AT LARGE, THROUGH MORE ACCURATE FORECASTS OF SURFACE-LEVEL WINDS IN LANDFALLING HURRICANES.SUBRECIPIENT ACTIVITIES: THE RECIPIENT DOES NOT INTEND TO SUBAWARD FUNDS.
